East China Normal University, a nationally renowned university under the direct auspices of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, is one of the earliest-established universities in China as well as one of the most prestigious universities in the country. Founded in 1951, it is nationally accredited by the Ministry of Education of the PRC and a member of the prestigious 211 and 985 projects. Boasting one of the most beautiful university campuses in China, the university is reputed as the “garden university.” ECNU is a research university with an extensive range of disciplines including education, social sciences, humanities, natural sciences & technologies and administrative sciences. It has 19 schools consisting of 47 departments with 65 undergraduate programs, 177 master’s programs, 120 doctoral programs and 14 post-doctoral programs. ECNU currently enrolls more than 30,000 students from all parts of China and abroad, of which more than 5,000 are international students.

With two campuses located in Minhang and Putuo District respectively totaling an area of over 220 hectares, East China Normal University has long been reputed as a “Garden University” for its beautiful campus scenes. Embracing both tradition and modernity, Shanghai is a dynamic and exciting city. Located at the mouth of the Yangtze River, it is one of the largest port cities in Asia. A thriving commercial city, Shanghai offers plenty for people, Chinese and Westerners alike, to enjoy.

Exchange students can choose one of following three options for enrollment at ECNU:

Curriculum Notes
The Standard Chinese Language Program includes 20 hours of language instruction per week and is offered at three levels: elementary, intermediate, and advanced.

English-taught courses in the Global China Program cover areas including business/economics, politics, sociology, psychology, cultural studies, philosophy, literature and art.

Students who wish to enroll in the General Visiting Program must be at the HSK-6 level of Chinese language, as all courses are taught in Chinese.

Fall: early September - mid January (the Global China Program ends in December)
Spring: mid February - early July

Accommodation and MealsAccommodation

There are four international student dorms on the Zhongshan Road Campus: International Exchange Service Center, No. 1 International Student Residence Hall, No. 2 International Student Residence Hall, and No. 12 Student Residence Hall. Details about the facilities at each dormitory can be found at the Accommodation page on ECNU's website. To live on campus student must submit a dorm reservation form along with the application for admission to ECNU. There are several dining halls and two restaurants on campus. Visiting international students can use their campus card (which also functions as a meal card) to eat at every dining hall on campus. International students also have access to various sport facilities including basketball, soccer, ping pong and badminton.

UVA students will pay their regular tuition rate and fees to UVA for the term they are on a UVA Exchange Program. Students are additionally responsible for room and board, transportation, and personal expenses. Students will pay the host institution or make their own arrangements for accommodations. Check the host institution web site for accommodation choices, cost, and application procedures.

Students are responsible for booking and paying for their own international airfare as well as researching and obtaining the necessary visa.

UVA students are required to purchase CISI emergency medical and accident insurance.

Scholarship
Any UVA student who applies to this exchange can apply for a scholarship through ECNU that would provide 2,500RMB (approximately $400) per month to assist with the costs of living and studying in Shanghai.

Expenses IconExpected Expenses

Tuition and Fees: Students will pay their regular tuition rate and fees to UVA for the term they are on a UVA Exchange Program. Tuition and fees will be billed to each student’s SIS account and can be paid as normal.

Housing and Meals: Students are responsible to pay for accommodation and any required or preferred meal plan. Students will pay the host institution or make their own arrangements for accommodations. Check the host institution web site for accommodation and meal plan choices, cost, and application procedures.

Travel and Travel Documents: Students are responsible for booking and paying for their own international airfare as well as researching and obtaining the necessary visa. Students should also budget for in-country transportation costs.

Insurance: UVA students are required to purchase CISI emergency medical and accident insurance. More information can be found on the insurance web page

Additional Expenses: Students should be prepared to purchase required books and supplies. Students should also budget for additional personal expenses; examples include laundry, phone costs, personal travel, meals out, etc.

Passport IconPassport and Visa

All participants will need a valid passport in order to participate in the program. Students must ensure that their passport is valid at least six months past the program return date. US passport holders will need a visa to participate in this program. International students should meet with their International Student Advisor and Education Abroad Advisor in the International Studies Office as part of the application process.

All students considering Education Abroad should consult the Students Abroad section of the U.S. Department of State’s web-based travel resources and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Traveler’s Health web resources to research health, safety, and security conditions; visa requirements; immunization requirements; and recommendations on staying healthy and safe in their target destination(s). Students should also carefully review the UVA Education Abroad Health & Safety Abroad web page. Parents and guardians are strongly advised to review all of these resources, as well. UVA students and visiting students enrolled in UVA Education Abroad programs are subject to the University of Virginia’s Policy on Student International Travel.
